Evidence has shown early education using the following techniques do help a lot:

(1) Using Phonics:
Kids can be taught to learn reading sounds that each letter makes. In this way
they can learn to read quicker by using this method.
(2) Alphabets can be useful, learning alphabets should be the first lesson
for every kid to learn how to read. Teaching ABCs to a little kid can be very useful.
(3) The Art of blending words using phonics can also be used as a useful tool in early child education.
(4) Bedtime reading is very useful kids reading motivation. Trying reading one or two story books to your kid(s)
before bedtime.

AS the kids get older seeking a tutor and expert opinion can help.

First off, curb their tv (or internet) habits and computer games addiction. These will make them lazy, dull and lack interest in studying their lessons. Prepare good snacks for them when they study so they will associate the pleasure of eating to studying. And reward them for their accomplishments or improvements no matter how little to give them encouragement. A pat on the back or smile or praise will do.
